About administration
Vilnius County is one of the 10 higher territorial administrative units of the Republic of Lithuania, established in 1994. It is the biggest region in the country by its area and population. It is rich in attractive landscape, live national traditions, historical - cultural heritage and natural as well as other recreational resources. Even three objects of the region are included into the list of UNESCO World Heritage: the Old Town of Vilnius (2001), the Archeological Locality of Kernavė (2004), the Geodesic Band of Struvė (2005). Vilnius County is inhabited by educated, active and creative people. There are great industrial and business potentials, concentrated main science, culture and sport resources of the country as well as structures of public services and administration.
Vilnius County consists of Vilnius City Municipality, Elektrėnai Municipality and District Municipalities of Šalčininkai, Širvintos, Švenčionys, Trakai, Ukmergė and Vilnius. Vilnius County is in the eastern part of Lithuania and has boarders with the Counties of Utena, Panevėžys, Kaunas, Alytus and The Republic of Belarus.
The county occupies the territory of 9760 km² and has the population of 850 000. The administrative center of the county is the capital of Lithuania – Vilnius City. Vilnius is the biggest city in the country with the area of 401 km² and 553 thousand of citizens. Vilnius is not only the administrative center, but also a large industrial, logistics, cultural, educational and science center making vital influence on the country development. Moreover, there are two historical capitals in the County: Kernavė and Trakai.
A short distance from Vilnius there is the Geographical Center of Europe, which was defined by French scientists.
Although there are 16 towns in the County, it still retained lots of natural, untouched by civilization spaces of nature. The County area includes 7 from 30 Lithuanian Regional parks or parts of them as well as a part of the Territory of Aukštaitija National Park. The County has great number of lakes, especially in Trakai and Švenčionys districts. The landscape is exclusively favorable for tourism development.
In Vilnius district there is the highest place in Lithuania – Aukštojo Hill (293,84m).
Vilnius County is a multilingual region. Approximately half of the inhabitants are Lithuanian, the third part is Polish and the tenth part is Russian.
